Welcome to Area XI

La Jolla Flowers

Area XI Represents an Important Part of California

We're in the Southern most region of our great state. We, as members, who live in the San Diego/Imperial region of the state continue to keep a close eye on political actions that could have a major impact on current and future retired teachers.

STRS
California State Teachers' Retirement System

CalRTA members in Area XI are very active in the Association's local, regional and state activities. We see ourselves as vital links in protecting teachers' pensions and supporting public education.

Legislation

  • CalRTA supports Single Payer - Universal Healthcare, Senator Sheila Keuhl's bill "SB 840.".
  • CalRTA opposes the Richman Initiative, that reduces Public Employee Benefits..
  • The court ordered the state to pay back STRS the five hundred million dollars used to balance the state budget. in November 2007.
  • Senator Diane Feinstein has reintroduced the Social Security Fairness Act (S.206) for teachers in the 110th Congress.

Committee chairs are working hard to enhance and protect your benefits. If you know any current or retired teachers encourage them to join CalRTA.  CalRTA can help you retain the "Gold" in the Golden Years.

Area Director’s Message

Area XI encompasses the southernmost portion of California and includes both San Diego and Imperial counties.  Our eight divisions provide a wonderful web of support designed to fulfill CalRTA’s core mission of protecting and enhancing the pensions of CalSTRS members.  Key goals include:

  • Full purchasing power protection for all retired educators.
  • Repeal of the Social Security Penalties (WEP and GPO).
  • Secure access to affordable, comprehensive health insurance.

If these issues resonate with you than one of our groups will be a perfect fit!

In addition to being your partner in pension protection, our area divisions offer so many other benefits!  Newsletters keep our nearly 4000 area members informed and connected.  Regular meetings provide interesting programs; up-to-date information on issues affecting pensions, seniors and public education; and an excellent opportunity to foster friendships with new acquaintances and long-time colleagues.  Our members also actively support the improvement of our communities by volunteering.   This past year Area XI members alone logged over 357,000 volunteer hours!  Additionally, many of our divisions contribute to the future by awarding college scholarships through their division scholarship foundations.

Please contact any one of us if you have questions or would like additional information about our dynamic area divisions.  We are committed to your security in retirement.  If you haven’t already, please join us and CalRTA today!

Action Alert #33    Keep it Going!    SSFairness.com
Oct. 21, 2011

Today we hit 5,000 signatures on our petition to the White House asking for the repeal of the WEP/GPO.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!  This means that they will study the issue and report back to each of us who signed the petition. (Petitions started after Oct. 3 must have 25,000 signatures. Ours began Sept. 26.)

Barack Obama was still a senator when he wrote the National Education Association saying that he would sign a bill to repeal these Social Security Offsets if he became president.  Has he forgotten us?  Does his current staff even know about the problem? This is our chance to make our point.  A petition to regulate puppy mills has more than 25,000 signatures.  Surely, we can do this well if people continue to forward the information.

Please try again, if you didn’t get on. Send the link to your family, friends and to anyone you know who is still working but will be affected when they retire. (http://wh.gov/4KL)  We need the voices of active employees and retired people in every district across the country.  Our petition has signatures from 48 states!  We are everywhere!!  (only the Dakotas are missing)

It's  -  http://wh.gov/4KL     just do it now!
Instructions are on our website at http://www.ssfairness.com/current-action/

 Why Join?
How To Join

Click the membership form above in the "How to Join" link to printout the PDF form.  Membership is $3.50 per month ($42 a year). Members receive Division newsletters,  and the state publication, Contact. Each member will receive major discounts by joining.  Monthly meetings include guest speakers, luncheons and holiday celebrations.  Joining the California Retired Teacher Association is a great opportunity to renew acquaintances and make new ones.

Grants/Scholarships

Area XI - Divisions award "Scholarships to High School Seniors" who are pursuing teaching careers. The scholarship winners are honored in May.  The scholarship fund also provides "Mini-Grants for Current Teachers."  Retired Teachers are honored in November during the 'Week of the Retired Teacher.'   We, as retired teachers,  in  each of our "Divisions" within "Area XI" San Diego/Imperial Counties devote thousands of volunteer hours to our nearby schools and community.   Each year thousands of dollars are raised to provide  scholarships to college students pursuing careers in education

Anyone interested in CRTA Merchandise, such as jackets, denim shirts, sweatshirts, with CRTA logo, appreciation items for volunteers,, CRTA gifts for presenters or scholarship recipients, etc. Please contact David Bisson at 858-554-0333 E-Mail

Community Service

Members are encouraged to keep a record of volunteer hours. The deadline for submitting the hours for Divisions is March 1, 2009.  These retired teacher  "service" hours add-up to millions of dollars saved statewide for our school districts and at community events taking place in our San Diego/Imperial Counties.
Members are also very involved in community service. In the most recent reporting cycle, members donated over 120,000 hours of their time in volunteer activities, worth more than two million dollars of free service for our local schools and nearby community.

Angelique Hill

The National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, the bipartisan group created to address our nation's

fiscal challenges, will hold its next meeting June 30 in Washington, D.C. CalRTA has formally requested an opportunity

to testify during the meeting. We would address Social Security solvency and Social Security equity.

We believe the Commission will provide an opportunity for retired educators to advocate for Social Security fairness

through repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).

The June issue of CalRTA Contact outlines the Commission and our current letter-writing campaign.  See page 4.

Closer to the meeting date we’ll learn if our request was granted. Watch for updates on this and other actions in our

fight against the WEP/GPO, our top Federal priorities.

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't "anymore."
No more hugs,no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one minute.  "Sometimes, what we care about the mostgets all used up and goes away, never to return before we can say good-bye,  say "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and
heal it when it's sick.  This is true for marriage ...
and old cars,
and children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, family and aging parents and grandparents.
We keep them because they are worth it ......
because we are worth it.

Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a sister-in-law after divorce.   There are just some things that make us happy, no matter what.Life is important.   We only have one.

We only have one mom, one dad,  one unique brother or sister or friend.

I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'!   Then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way.  Now it's your turn to send this to all those people who are "keepers" in your life, including the person who sent it,  if you feel that way.

Suppose one morning you never wake up.
Do all your friends know you love them?   I was thinking, I could die today, tomorrow or next week, and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that needed rekindling or three words needing to be said.

Let every one of your friends and family know you love them.  Even if you think they don't love you back, you would be amazed at what those three little words and a smile can do.   And just in case GOD calls me home . . .
I LOVE YA !
:-)
Live today to the fullest
because tomorrow is not promised.

God bless!
