Welcome to Area XI

La Jolla Flowers

Area XI Represents an Important Part of California

We're in the Southern most region of our great state. We, as members, who live in the San Diego/Imperial region of the state continue to keep a close eye on political actions that could have a major impact on current and future retired teachers.

STRS
California State Teachers' Retirement System

CRTA members in Area XI are very active in the Association's local, regional and state activities. We see ourselves as vital links in protecting teachers' pensions and supporting public education.

Legislation

  • CRTA supports Single Payer - Universal Healthcare, Senator Sheila Keuhl's bill "SB 840.".
  • CRTA opposes the Richman Initiative, that reduces Public Employee Benefits..
  • The court ordered the state to pay back STRS the five hundred million dollars used to balance the state budget. in November 2007.
  • Senator Diane Feinstein has reintroduced the Social Security Fairness Act (S.206) for teachers in the 110th Congress.

Committee chairs are working hard to enhance and protect your benefits. If you know any current or retired teachers encourage them to join CRTA.  CRTA can help you retain the "Gold" in the Golden Years.

Area Director’s Message

CalRTA AREA XI WEBSITE SPRING 2010 MESSAGE

Welcome to Area XI of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA) website. I hope this year is off to a good start for all of you.

On March 2, 2010, Area XI will have a Leadership Council meeting for division presidents and area committee chairperson. Patty Bender, the Area XI membership chairperson, will discuss plans for increasing membership. The second topic will be how to develop leadership in divisions. The new program will be presented by Dr. Angela Aschbrenner. Division presidents will report on activities that are happening in their divisions.

On March 11, 2010, Advocacy Day will be held in Sacramento. CalRTA’s purpose for having Advocacy Day is to “advocate for (or against) a specific bill or issue which impacts CalRTA. Advocacy Day gives CalRTA members an opportunity to learn more about each legislator and what they stand for. Division members have the experience of visiting the legislator’s Capitol office and meeting the staff. I hope that divisions will be able to send their legislation chairperson to Sacramento for Advocacy Day. If there are other division members who wish to attend, please let your division presidents know. I hope to see many of you in Sacramento on March 11.

CalRTA Area XI Director
Norma Huhn

As Area XI Communications Chair, I am constantly "Singing your praises" explaining how last year, 20% of you reported your "VOLUNTEER HOURS" and we, as Calif. Retired Teachers grabbed our legislators' attention with over 2.50 million hours, which saved the state over $ 50 million dollars. Just imagine the hours we could report if all of our CalRTA members reported their many hours.
Do you think California's media and legislators take notice when $ 50 MILLION is mentioned??? They sure do. That number helps us educate the state's media and legislators that retired educators contribute significantly to their communities, and California would be hurt without them. That is why we really need every member to report your VOLUNTEER HOURS  NOW!
If you are donating your time and not getting paid, then those hours of helping, driving, traveling, tutoring, knitting, giving blood ,cooking, attending meetings, etc. they all count.
If you are not sure, check with your division communications chair or president. You can also call the CalRTA office at 1-800-523-2782. We need your hours, call today!

Thanks, & Bless you, Angela

Community Service

Members are encouraged to keep a record of volunteer hours. The deadline for submitting the hours for Divisions is March 1, 2009.  These retired teacher  "service" hours add-up to millions of dollars saved statewide for our school districts and at community events taking place in our San Diego/Imperial Counties.
Members are also very involved in community service. In the most recent reporting cycle, members donated over 120,000 hours of their time in volunteer activities, worth more than two million dollars of free service for our local schools and nearby community.

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't "anymore."
No more hugs,no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one minute.  "Sometimes, what we care about the most
gets all used up and goes away, never to return before we can say good-bye,  say "I love you."

So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and
heal it when it's sick.  This is true for marriage ...
and old cars,
and children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, family and aging parents and grandparents.
We keep them because they are worth it ......
because we are worth it.

Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a sister-in-law after divorce.   There are just some things that make us happy, no matter what.Life is important.   We only have one.

We only have one mom, one dad,  one unique brother or sister or friend.

I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'!   Then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way.  Now it's your turn to send this to all those people who are "keepers" in your life, including the person who sent it,  if you feel that way.

Suppose one morning you never wake up.
Do all your friends know you love them?   I was thinking, I could die today, tomorrow or next week, and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that needed rekindling or three words needing to be said.

Let every one of your friends and family know you love them.  Even if you think they don't love you back, you would be amazed at what those three little words and a smile can do.   And just in case GOD calls me home . . .
I LOVE YA !
:-)
Live today to the fullest
because tomorrow is not promised.

God bless!
